Chromatography Vials, Inserts, and Closures
Chrom Tech offers a large portfolio of chromatography vials for use with most autosamplers for Mass Spectrometry, GC, and HPLC applications. Vials are very commonly used in chromatography as single-operation handling containers that can be made of glass or plastic with a variety of closure options.
Sample volatility, sample amount, and light sensitivity are a few of the factors that can play a role in choosing the right vial for your application.
For laboratories using an autosampler on their HPLC or GC system, make sure to use autosampler vials that are compatible with your specific autosampler. The 12 x 32mm vial has become the industry standard for most chromatography autosamplers (except for headspace autosamplers which accept 20 mm wide autosampler vials). The most common vial is the 9mm screw tread vial, which has an opening large enough to easily pipette while still having the neck and closure compatibility for most autosamplers.
Vials and their compatible closures and caps come in many types, to accommodate the various sample types, testing methods, and storage needs. To determine which chromatography vial will work best for your analysis, start by determining the vial closure style:
- Screw Thread Vials – typically used for HPLC and LCMS, and do not require tools for attaching or removing the vial cap.
- Crimp Vials – commonly used for GC analysis, as they are the best option for laboratories concerned with evaporation but are also used when chain-of-custody or tamper-proof closures are required.
- Snap Top Vials – very convenient, and sometimes preferred over screw thread vials. Typically used for HPLC and LCMS applications.
For storage, a solid top screw thread vial with a PTFE/F217 closure is very common because of the foam extruded between the layers of polyethylene that can be torqued down with 20 lbs. of pressure, but still return to almost 100% of its original shape once the pressure is backed off for a solid seal.
Once the closure style has been determined, the next step is to determine the vial volume needed based on the sample size. Our 12 x 32mm chromatography vials typically hold 2mL, however you can use a compatible insert, or a limited volume vial. Find limited autosampler vial inserts for small volume applications. You’ll also need to determine the best material and color for your vial. The most common autosampler vial material is the Type 1 Borosilicate Glass, which is the least reactive glass, making it a great option for sensitive chromatography applications. We also offer plastic vials as an economical option when you need a limited volume vial. Polypropylene is the most common plastic option as it is compatible with most typical HPLC solvents, however we do offer polyethylene for acids, alcohols, and bases and TPX polymethylpentene for heat and chemical resistance. In any material, clear vials are the most common, however amber glass or black polypropylene vials should be used for light-sensitive samples.
