Syringe Filters

Syringe Filters

As chromatography has evolved toward higher pressures and smaller column dimensions, particle control has become critical to achieving reliable and reproducible results. Chrom Tech’s HPLC syringe filters are designed to prevent particulates from entering your system, minimizing buildup and reducing instrument downtime. Using the correct syringe filter protects sensitive components, extends column life, and maintains consistent data quality across applications.

  • Available in two standard diameters: 13 mm and 30 mm
  • Pore sizes: 0.2 µm and 0.45 µm for fine or general filtration
  • Glass fiber filters available in 1.2 µm and 0.7 µm pore sizes
  • Offered in seven color-coded membrane types for easy identification

Choose from a wide range of membrane materials, including Nylon, PTFE, PVDF, PES, Polypropylene (PP), Cellulose Acetate (CA), and Glass Fiber (GF)—each engineered for specific chemical compatibilities and performance needs. Learn more about selection in our guide on how to choose a syringe filter, or contact sales@chromtech.com for assistance.

All available membranes can also be purchased as sheets for custom applications.

Membrane Comparison Guide
Membrane Type Hydrophilic / Hydrophobic Compatible Solvents Best For Limitations
Nylon Hydrophilic Aqueous + most organics General lab use, HPLC sample prep Not suitable for strong acids/bases
PTFE Hydrophobic Aggressive organics, strong acids/bases, gases Organic solvents, chemically resistant applications Requires pre-wetting for aqueous samples
PVDF Hydrophilic or Hydrophobic Aqueous + organic solvents Protein recovery, biological samples Lower chemical resistance than PTFE
Polyethersulfone (PES) Hydrophilic Aqueous solutions, biological fluids Fast flow rates, cell culture media, low protein binding Not ideal for strong solvents or aggressive organics
Polypropylene (PP) Hydrophobic Wide pH range, aqueous + organic solvents Chemical resistance, low extractables Lower flow rates than PES or Nylon
Cellulose Acetate (CA) Hydrophilic Aqueous solutions Low protein binding, tissue culture media, enzyme filtration Limited solvent compatibility, not for aggressive organics
Glass Fiber (GF) Hydrophilic Aqueous + organic mixtures Pre-filtration of viscous or particulate-heavy samples Not for final filtration; use as pre-filter with another membrane
Typical Applications by Industry:
Pharmaceutical – Sample clarification before HPLC/UPLC
Environmental – Water and soil extract filtration
Food & Beverage – Additive, sugar, and residue testing
Biotech / Clinical – Protein assays, enzyme solutions, tissue culture
Chemical – Solvent and reaction mixture filtration

Frequently Asked Questions

Which syringe filter membrane should I use for HPLC samples?

For general HPLC sample filtration, Nylon or PES filters are ideal due to low extractables and broad solvent compatibility. For aggressive organics, PTFE is preferred.

What pore size should I choose?

Use 0.2 µm for fine particulate removal and 0.45 µm for routine sample clarification or general filtration applications.

Can syringe filters be reused?

Syringe filters are designed for single use to ensure sample purity and prevent contamination. Reuse is not recommended, especially for trace or analytical applications.
