Molecular Weight Cut-Off (MWCO) 96-Well Filter Plates

MWCO filter plates are designed for molecular separation and concentration workflows where precise size-based filtration is required. Common applications include:

  • Separating large molecules from small molecules
  • Removing unincorporated labels after protein modification reactions
  • Concentrating protein peaks following gel-permeation chromatography
  • Protein enrichment from tissue culture media, antisera, or antibody solutions
  • Desalting and buffer exchange after ion-exchange or affinity chromatography

For laboratories not currently using 96-well plate formats, Chrom Tech also offers alternative filtration solutions including syringe filters and filter vials.

Chrom Tech filter plates and tubes are manufactured from DNase/RNase- and protease-free certified plastics. Products are non-sterile by default, but may be autoclaved when required. Recommended autoclave conditions are 121°C (250°F) at 15 psi for 15 minutes.

Application
Nylon   General laboratory and HPLC sample filtration prior to injection. Solvent resistant with low extractables; not ideal when protein recovery is critical.
PTFE     Hydrophobic and chemically resistant to most solvents, acids, and bases. Low extractables; can block water vapor (useful for transducer protection).
PVDF Solvent resistant membrane with low UV-adsorbing extractables. Used for HPLC sample filtration and general biological filtration; low protein binding.
PES Mechanically strong with low inorganic extractables. Typical uses include ion chromatography, tissue culture filtration, and filtration of proteins and nucleic acids.
Cellulose Acetate   Very low protein binding (often less than PVDF) and ideal for aqueous samples. Excellent when maximum protein recovery in filtrate is critical.
PP   Hydrophilic membrane with broad chemical compatibility to many organic solvents. A strong choice for HPLC sample filtration in protein analysis workflows.
RC Regenerated Cellulose is hydrophilic, solvent resistant, and low protein binding. Ideal for removing particulates from HPLC samples prior to injection; low water extractables.
NC     Nitrocellulose (mixed esters) filters are hydrophilic and made from cellulose nitrate/cellulose acetate blends. Fast flow rates due to a uniform membrane structure.

Key Definitions
96-Well Filter Plate
A microplate-format filtration device that enables simultaneous processing of up to 96 samples for high-throughput clarification, cleanup, or concentration workflows.
Membrane (Filter Membrane)
The porous filtration material in each well that controls chemical compatibility, binding behavior, and particle or biomolecule retention during sample preparation.
Pore Size
The nominal opening size of the membrane (for example, 0.2 µm or 0.45 µm) that impacts flow rate and the size of particulates retained during filtration.
Vol/Well
The maximum recommended sample volume that each well is designed to process, helping ensure consistent filtration performance and reliable recovery.
SBS Footprint
Standardized microplate dimensions that ensure compatibility with automation platforms, microplate carriers, and common laboratory instruments.
Low-Binding / Low-Extractable
Membrane and plastic characteristics designed to minimize analyte adsorption and reduce leachables, supporting cleaner baselines and more consistent quantitative results.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are 96-well filter plates used for?
96-well filter plates enable rapid, parallel filtration of multiple samples for workflows such as protein cleanup, desalting, concentration, and general sample clarification in high-throughput laboratories.
Can these plates be used with automated liquid handlers?
Yes. The standard SBS footprint and skirted plate design allow full compatibility with robotic systems, automated workstations, and common microplate accessories.
How do I choose between 0.2 µm and 0.45 µm pore sizes?
Use 0.2 µm membranes for finer particulate removal and cleaner samples, and 0.45 µm membranes when higher flow rates are desired and larger particles are acceptable.
Are the filter plates sterile?
Plates are supplied non-sterile but are manufactured from DNase/RNase- and protease-free certified plastics. They may be autoclaved when sterile conditions are required.
What applications benefit most from MWCO filter plates?
MWCO plates are commonly used for protein concentration, buffer exchange, removal of unincorporated labels, and molecular separation based on size exclusion.
