Key Definitions â–¸
Ferrule
A high-temperature compression seal used to secure a GC capillary column inside the inlet, detector, or coupling. Ferrules ensure leak-free connections and stable flow paths during analysis.
Graphite Ferrule
A soft, conformable ferrule ideal for high-temperature GC applications. Provides excellent sealing without sticking to fused-silica columns, making removal and column trimming easier.
Vespel Ferrule
A thermally stable polyimide ferrule that maintains dimensional integrity at elevated temperatures and delivers long-life sealing for GC/MS and vacuum applications.
85% Vespel / 15% Graphite
A hybrid ferrule combining durability with improved sealing conformity. Suitable for GC/MS interfaces, high-vacuum environments, and repeated thermal cycling.
Ultimetal Plus Flexible Metal Ferrule
A flexible metal ferrule with Agilent’s inertness treatment, designed to prevent sticking, reduce analyte adsorption, and ensure robust connections in reusable hardware assemblies.
Leak-Free Flow Path
A stable, sealed interface that maintains carrier-gas purity and prevents oxygen or moisture intrusion—critical for protecting GC columns and maintaining consistent retention times.
Frequently Asked Questions â–¸
Which ferrule material should I use for my GC column?
Graphite ferrules are ideal for high-temperature applications and easy removal, while Vespel and Vespel/graphite blends offer higher durability and better performance in GC/MS or vacuum systems. Ultimetal Plus flexible metal ferrules provide maximum inertness and reusability.
Do ferrules need to be replaced regularly?
Yes. Ferrules deform during installation and thermal cycling, so they should be replaced whenever columns are trimmed, reinstalled, or when leaks are detected to ensure a stable, inert flow path.
Are ferrules interchangeable between different Agilent inlet and detector types?
No. Ferrule dimensions and hole sizes must match your inlet or detector fitting. Chrom Tech lists each ferrule’s compatibility to help you select the correct part for your specific GC configuration.
